Speaking of which, pay attention to weapons manufacturers - there’s a handful, and their guns all have their own unique familial characteristics. The most unique guns in the PreSequel are lasers - they’re not in any of the other games, and they’re really cool to shoot (my favorites are Maliwan “Blaster” lasers, with a shock or cryo element and a scope - can work as assault rifles or snipers or SMGs, from one moment to the next). Cryo damage might be my favorite - can freeze enemies, and then you can melee them to pieces. Shock works well on shields, corrosive against armor, and fire is good for flesh (basically non-shielded and non-armored), but fire isn’t much use outside where there’s no air. Learn how the elements work - elemental damage is a big part of the Borderlands franchise. Legendary guns can also have interesting capabilities worth looking up. It’s worth looking them up on the Borderlands Wiki to see if they’re especially useful. (And don’t be afraid to carry around gear you can’t use yet, if you find something really amazing - you’ll get to it’s level eventually.)Īlso note that there are some guns, referred to as “uniques”, that are usually blue rarity but have some red text on the item card (possibly just a pithy saying) - these can have “interesting” capabilities. It takes a little time to develop a feel for this. A very rough comparison for guns is DPS - damage times fire rate - but that may not tell the whole story (a gun with more dps, but a small magazine and slow reload may lose out to a lower dps gun that spends less time reloading, for instance).

Borderlands the pre sequel picking up the pieces code#
Get used to the rarity color code for gear (lowest is white, then green, blue, purple, and orange/gold is legendary), and keep your eye out for rarer gear, but keep in mind that what actually matters is the stats, regardless of rarity/level. It’s also particularly helpful to collect missions as early as possible, as oftentimes the main story mission will send you to a particular area and if you haven’t picked up the corresponding side missions first, you may have to go back to the same map more times than necessary.

It’s generally best to look through your available missions and do the lower-leveled ones first, then work your way up.įind side missions by checking the map for yellow “!”s, and go collect them all. Missions are tagged with a level, and it’ll describe the mission as “impossible”, “tough”, “normal”, “trivial”, etc., depending on how your current level compares to the mission’s level. Also get in the habit of marking all the gear you care about as “favorite” - the vending machines have an option to quickly sell all non-favorite gear in one go. It’s best to lean into a few preferred gun types (I like pistols, SMGs and lasers, but you may have different preferences), and backpack storage space - the latter, because the more junk you can haul around, the more you can pick up and sell, to get more cash. You’ll find yourself finding/collecting “moonstones” - these will be spent eventually to increase your ammo and gear carrying capacity. It’s also worth getting in the habit of checking every vending machine you happen by - I’ve gotten some really great gear from them on occasion. You want to collect all the spare gear that gets dropped (or found in chests) and sell to vending machines to get cash that you can then use to buy ammo and more gear. you’re carrying half a dozen types of ammo, but if you only have pistols and you run out of pistol ammo, you’re stuck).īorderlands games are very much “looter shooters” - they basically created the genre. Some have skills that help with particular types, or with particular elements, but that doesn’t matter much starting out - indeed, it’s best to start with the best gun or two of each type, because your ammo capacity is limited at the start (i.e. Do all the side missions - they’ll help you keep your level up, and some of them reward gear that may be useful (in particular, Janey has a mission right after you get to the moon that involves getting some pictures taken for promotional posters - this rewards the choice of two Oz kits - one of which will use spare oxygen cylinders to refill your health - I’ve found this useful up to like level 10 or so).Įvery character can use every gun.
